ACT I

Gabriel von Eisenstein is preparing to serve a short jail sentence for insulting a government official. Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinda, receives an unexpected visit from her former admirer, Alfred. Although Rosalinda tries to send him away, Alfred is determined to stay and serenades her in hopes of rekindling old feelings. Rosalinda convinces him to return after Eisenstein reports to prison.

Eisenstein’s friend Dr. Falke persuades him to delay reporting to prison and instead enjoy one last evening of freedom at a lavish masquerade ball hosted by Prince Orlofsky. Falke paints an irresistible picture of the evening ahead while quietly setting his revenge in motion. Before they leave, he encourages Eisenstein to bring along his pocket watch, assuring him it will help charm the ladies at the party.

Meanwhile, Rosalinda’s maid Adele has received an invitation to Prince Orlofsky’s ball. Eager for an evening of glamour and excitement, she invents a family emergency and asks for time off. Despite Rosalinda’s doubts, Adele leaves to attend the festivities.

After Eisenstein departs for the ball, Alfred returns for dinner with Rosalinda. Their conversation is interrupted when Frank, the prison warden, arrives to escort Eisenstein to jail. To avoid a scandal that could damage Rosalinda’s reputation, Alfred allows himself to be mistaken for Eisenstein and is taken to jail in his place.

As the evening begins, Eisenstein, Rosalinda, Adele, Frank, and Dr. Falke all find themselves headed toward Prince Orlofsky’s celebration, each with secrets to conceal and plans of their own.

ACT II

Prince Orlofsky, bored by nearly everything life has to offer, hosts extravagant parties in the hope of finding some amusement. Tonight’s entertainment arrives in the form of Dr. Falke’s carefully orchestrated scheme, as an unlikely collection of guests gathers under assumed identities. As the celebration begins, the guests join Orlofsky, welcoming an evening devoted to pleasure and bubbly diversion.

Adele presents herself as a glamorous young actress, and delights in mingling among Vienna’s elite. When Eisenstein recognizes her as his maid, Adele skillfully turns the tables, dismissing the accusation with such charm and virtuosity that the guests can only laugh along with her.

Frank, attending under an assumed identity of his own, is equally determined to enjoy the evening’s entertainment. Meanwhile, Dr. Falke quietly watches as the pieces of his carefully crafted plan fall into place. Rosalinda arrives disguised as a Hungarian countess. When her identity is questioned, she delivers a dazzling display of Hungarian pride that convinces everyone of her assumed identity. Eisenstein, failing to recognize his own wife, is immediately captivated by the mysterious masked beauty and begins flirting with her. Amused by his bold advances, Rosalinda plays along, encouraging him to display his charm. Before the evening is over, she persuades him to give her his pocket watch.

The festivities culminate in the famous Champagne Chorus, as the guests raise their glasses in a joyous toast to friendship, pleasure, and champagne. As they make their way home, Eisenstein remains blissfully unaware that he has spent the evening courting his own wife. Rosalinda now possesses both his pocket watch and proof of his deception, while Dr. Falke waits patiently for the final act of his revenge.

ACT III

The following morning at the jail, order is in short supply. The sleepy jailer Frosch struggles to manage a steady stream of unexpected visitors, providing plenty of comic relief as the night’s deceptions begin to unravel.

Eisenstein finally arrives to begin serving his sentence, only to learn that another man has already been imprisoned under his name. Suspecting Rosalinda of infidelity, he disguises himself as a lawyer in an attempt to uncover the truth. Before long, Rosalinda, Adele, Alfred, Frank, and Dr. Falke all converge at the jail, each bringing a different version of the previous night’s events.

As accusations fly and misunderstandings multiply, Rosalinda calmly produces Eisenstein’s pocket watch. Faced with undeniable evidence that he gave it away while flirting at Prince Orlofsky’s ball, Eisenstein realizes that the mysterious Hungarian countess was actually his own wife.

With the disguises discarded and the confusion untangled, Dr. Falke finally reveals the truth. Years earlier, Eisenstein abandoned him in public while he was dressed as a bat after a costume ball, leaving him the laughingstock of Vienna. The previous night’s elaborate deceptions were Falke’s good-natured revenge. The deception exposed and the score settled, old grievances are forgiven. The company raises a final toast to friendship, reconciliation, and the champagne that made the entire adventure possible.
